Bethesda homes span a century of construction

Bethesda holds some of the oldest and some of the newest housing stock in Montgomery County, often within a few blocks of each other. Near the older sections you find homes built before the war, with ductwork retrofitted into houses that were originally heated by radiators. Closer to the newer development around the downtown core, the systems are modern and the issues are entirely different.

The retrofit homes are the more involved job. When central air is added to a house that was never designed for it, the duct routing gets improvised through closets, soffits, and whatever chase space the builder could find. Runs are longer and more convoluted than in a purpose-built system, which means more surface for material to settle on and more access points required to clean it properly.
