5 signs your air ducts are polluting your home’s air
Your HVAC system moves the same air through your home 5–7 times a day. If the ducts it travels through are coated in dust, pollen or mold, that’s what your family breathes — all day, every day. Here are the five signs we see most often in Northern Virginia homes.
1. Dust returns within 48 hours
If every surface is coated again two days after dusting, your ducts are likely recirculating debris. A clean system dramatically slows how fast dust resettles.
2. Allergy symptoms that flare indoors
Sneezing, congestion or itchy eyes that get worse at home point to indoor allergen load: pollen, pet dander and dust mites accumulate inside ductwork.
3. Musty odor when the HVAC kicks on
A damp, earthy smell from the vents often means moisture — and possibly mold — in the ducts or coil.
4. Black streaks around supply vents
Those dark ‘ghosting’ streaks around a register are dust and soot particles being blown past the vent edges.
5. Rooms with weak or uneven airflow
Debris buildup, crushed flex duct or blocked returns can choke airflow to whole rooms.
What to do next
Don’t pay anyone who quotes per-vent over the phone without seeing your system. A reputable company — NADCA-certified, licensed in Virginia — will inspect first, quote flat, and prove the result.
